Digital Day: Initialization of an industry 4.0 transformation

Context
A business unit with production sites on several continents has identified many opportunities in the development of “industry 4.0” technologies to improve operational performance across all its activities. Faced with a vast area of technologies that are not well known to all the company’s stakeholders, they asked us to initiate this transformation process with a desire to start from the field.
Approach
A visit to the main BU site and a workshop with representatives of the various business lines enabled us to fully understand the current processes and identify the main points for improvement and the associated challenges. We organized the Digital Day highlighting the technologies which strong potential development had been spotted thanks to the collected information.
We then invited representatives from all the sites and businesses for a two-step discovery day: the morning was dedicated to discovering the technologies (challenges, limits, industrial use cases) and the afternoon to reflect on concrete application cases and initiate the roadmap.
Results
This approach made it possible to initiate the transformation towards industry 4.0 on several levels: initialization of a roadmap of 50 pre-qualified and prioritized improvement projects responding to a real business need; awareness at all levels of the opportunities offered by digital technologies and their limits, to initiate the beginning of a change in culture; launch of transformation dynamics driven by all businesses and not simply imposed by management.
